Wisconsin drivers must be able to provide proof of auto insurance under a new law that took effect June 1, leaving New Hampshire as the only state not mandating coverage.

All motorists operating vehicles in the state must carry an insurance card, which police can ask for during any traffic stop. Failure to carry proof of insurance means a $10 fine, while failing to have vehicle insurance carries a fine of up to $500.

The state has about 14% uninsured motorists, according to police estimates.

When they passed the insurance proof law, state lawmakers also passed a minimum coverage provision, increasing the minimum mandatory coverage from $25,000 for an individual and $50,000 per accident to $50,000 per individual and $100,000 per accident.

That law took effect Jan. 1.

Both laws are part of Gov. Jim Doyle’s state auto insurance reform effort, which was included in his two-year budget proposal.
